- Experts believe that this acquisition may have a positive impact on the cybersecurity landscape.
Mimecast, a human risk management platform and cybersecurity provider, has announced the acquisition of Code42, a company specializing in insider risk management. The companies haven’t yet disclosed the financial details of the acquisition.
Before the acquisition, the company partnered with Code42 in May to release Mimecast for Incydr Flows. The solution was expected to help protect companies from data leaks and theft by offering users visibility into risky activities across the web, email, and cloud, among others.
Regarding the acquisition, Marc van Zadelhoff, CEO of Mimecast, said, “Integrating leading solutions like Code42 broadens and deepens our proven security and human risk management capabilities.”
“Protecting organizations from data exfiltration requires enhanced visibility into risky user activities across email, collaboration platforms, web, cloud, and more. By joining forces with Mimecast, we can help customers quickly detect and respond to threats across their expansive digital environments,” said Joe Payne, President & CEO of Code42.
With Code42’s acquisition, its IncydrTM product is available to Mimecast customers, and its capabilities will be integrated into Mimecast’s platform shortly.

The Implications of the Acquisition
Code42’s acquisition is the latest in a series of deals by Mimecast. In January of this year, the company acquired Elevate Security, a human risk management solutions provider. Before that, the company acquired Segasec and MessageControl in January and July 2020, respectively. The company also acquired a few other security solutions providers earlier.
Talking about this latest acquisition, Derek Brink, VP & Research Fellow, Aberdeen Strategy & Research, said, “Mimecast’s acquisition of Code42 adds valuable capabilities for understanding and managing insider risk, a topic that Aberdeen Strategy & Research has been writing about for several years.
Many people use insider threat interchangeably with insider risk, but this is inaccurate and misleading.
Both terms refer to insiders. But in common usage, an insider threat refers specifically to an authorized user with malicious intent—e.g., a rogue employee.
In contrast, insider risk refers to the likelihood and business impact of the exposure or compromise of your valuable enterprise data due to legitimate insider access, regardless of their intent.
“Code42’s solutions are designed to give organizations visibility and context into how many of their files are being exposed through day-to-day activities, which is one of the two essential things they need to understand and manage their insider risk.
Even if the announcement’s language reflects the unfortunate and inconsistent use of terminology in today’s cybersecurity industry, it nonetheless reflects a strategic and complementary combination of capabilities between Mimecast and Code42,” said Brink.
Given each company’s strengths, the acquisition may have a positive outcome for the cybersecurity landscape.
