- Amazon’s AWS computing unit is in discussions with the Italian government about investing billions of euros in expanding its data center business offerings in Europe.
- The new effort is expected to bring new cloud opportunities for governments, non-profits, startups, developers, and large enterprises.
Amazon’s AWS computing unit is in discussions with the Italian government as part of the company’s efforts to bolster its cloud offerings across Europe. While the size of the investment and location of operations have yet to be confirmed, expanding the existing facilities in Milan is possible.
So far, spokespeople from both Amazon and the cabinet’s office digital transition department have not commented on the development. However, if the deal goes through, it will likely be a significant upgrade to the first cloud region launched by AWS in Italy in 2020. Furthermore, the company has announced plans to invest around 2 billion euros by 2029. AWS also plans to invest 7.8 billion euros in Germany by 2040.

The potential deal follows a 15.7 billion euro investment in developing data centers in Spain. While the Italian investment is also expected to be large, it is not likely to reach Spain’s scale. The deal will likely improve cloud infrastructure services for telecom players who require massive resources.
The move follows an AWS announcement in 2023 declaring its intention to store the data of governments and customers on servers located in the EU to meet data privacy requirements, particularly in highly regulated sectors. It also highlights the rising levels of organizational spending on cloud computing due to the growing interest in artificial intelligence, which will likely continue for the foreseeable future.
