  • Four more states have joined the DOJ’s civil antitrust lawsuit, which alleges that Apple has been monopolizing the smartphone industry.
  • With the addition of Washington, Indiana, Nevada, and Massachusetts, the number of states suing the tech giant has increased to 20.

Adding to Apple’s woes, four more states have joined the Department of Justices (DoJ) antitrust lawsuit. Massachusetts, Indiana, Washington, and Nevada bring the total number of states to 20 (including Washington, D.C.). According to the DOJ’s lawsuit, Apple has violated local laws and the Sherman Antitrust Act by using the company’s software-hardware ecosystem to generate a monopoly in the smartphone industry.

The case complains about Apple’s efforts to block apps with multiple functionalities, such as enabling cloud-based streaming services, switching from one mobile device to another, and tap-to-pay features for third-party digital wallet applications. The Sherman Antitrust Act has been successfully used against Microsoft for violations in 2001.

Additionally, the lawsuit focuses on poor functionality and compatibility issues between third-party products and Apple’s official solutions, such as messaging compatibility issues between Apple and non-Apple phones.

This is not the only antitrust suit the tech leader is facing. Japan is threatening Big Tech firms, including Apple, with massive fines for app store policies. The company is also facing an antitrust investigation in the U.K. In addition, the EU has fined Apple approximately $2 billion for its policies related to third-party streaming apps. The lawsuit’s success could have significant ramifications for tech companies in the near future.
