AUSTIN, Texas – July 24, 2006 – Spiceworks™, Inc., today announced the immediate availability of the industry’s first free IT management software designed to meet the unique needs of small and medium businesses and organizations. The beta version of the Spiceworks browser-based “IT Desktop” integrates a number of features that help smaller organizations automatically inventory, monitor and report on software and hardware running in their IT networks. Spiceworks does this with a “one-click” approach that makes managing networks and systems as simple as browsing the Internet. In addition, the Spiceworks software works without having to install agents, write scripts, or utilize onsite support services.
“I was very impressed with the new Spiceworks software,” said Jasper Pierce, Systems Analyst, Collins Financial Services, Inc. “In just minutes, I was able to intuitively and easily inventory all the hardware and software on our network, run monitors and create reports – for free and without outside help. Now, I can easily see what’s on my network and find the information I need to do my job with just one click.”
The release of the Spiceworks beta software, which is ideal for managing networks with up to 250 devices, follows the successful “Spice IT Up!” alpha software testing program in which more than 200 IT professionals in small and medium companies across many industries participated. Some of the participants included Collins Financial Services, Inc., Labnow, Motion Computing, Nanocoolers, Pluck, Summit Architecture, and VCFO.
The main features available in the beta version of the software include:
- Automatic & Agent-less Hardware and Software Inventory: Allows IT managers to automatically discover and inventory hardware, including PCs, servers, printers, and network devices, as well as the software, services and patches on individual machines – all without having to install agents. Users can also add custom data, such as licenses, purchase information and the physical location of devices.
- Hardware, Software and User Monitoring: Automatically creates monitors for offline servers, workstation and server disk space, bandwidth-sapping software and new users on the network. Monitors can be easily modified to identify specific software programs or to set unique alert conditions.
- On-the-fly Reports: Uses live network data to create reports, such as a summary of IT assets, detailed configuration information for all computers, disk usage by device, IP phones in the network, and low disk space.
In addition to its core product features, Spiceworks makes finding hardware and software information simple with its “one-click” search. When the user clicks on hardware or software, Spiceworks can display other devices with similar properties on the network or all the machines on which that software is installed. Spiceworks also makes searching for relevant IT information on the Internet easier by allowing users to automatically feed Google relevant information throughout the IT management process. In addition, it provides direct links to vendor support sites and to Microsoft Knowledge Base articles.
“You don’t need to pay thousands of dollars in licensing fees, drown in endless user manuals or get lost in countless tools to manage your company’s hardware and software,” said Scott Abel, CEO of Spiceworks. “By creating a browser-based IT management desktop that’s as simple to use as surfing the web, buying a book or managing your digital music, we’re helping to simplify the daily tasks of everyday IT managers so they can better do their jobs.”
