Free Spiceworks IT Management Software Deployed by More Than 5,000 Organizations in 80 Countries in First 30 Days

New E-mail Alerts, Software Reports and Network Information 'Notes' Added to Latest Beta Version

AUSTIN, Texas – September 08, 2006 – Spiceworks™, Inc., the provider of the industry’s first free ad-supported IT management software, today announced that more than 5,000 small and midsize businesses and organizations in over 80 countries around the world are currently using the Spiceworks browser-based “IT Desktop” to manage the software and hardware running in their IT networks. The company also announced that it added several new features to its beta software, including ‘one-click’ e-mail alerts for hardware and software monitors, new software reports to aid in license compliance, and a unique ‘network notes’ feature that lets IT administrators easily tag individual devices with the critical information they need to do their jobs.

“In just minutes I was able to tackle IT management tasks with the free Spiceworks software that would be difficult to accomplish using other network and systems management tools that cost thousands of dollars,” said Jon Chorney, Systems Administrator for Master, Sidlow & Associates, a Delaware-based accounting firm. “Also, I’ve participated in many beta software tests over the last twenty years but have never seen a product evolve so quickly based on direct feedback from the user community. I am impressed that Spiceworks listens to its users and adds the features we want most so we can better do our jobs.”

The Spiceworks IT Desktop, designed to meet the unique needs of small and medium organizations, is ideal for managing networks with up to 250 devices. Businesses across a variety of industries as well as government, education and non-profit organizations are currently using Spiceworks software to manage software and hardware devices across multiple operating systems and platforms. Relevant text ads are displayed on topics that are useful to IT professionals, such as online storage, disaster recovery and VoIP implementation. The ads are similar to what a person sees when conducting a search through a leading search engine.

Core product features available in the Spiceworks software today include the ability to automatically discover, inventory, monitor and report on the hardware and software running in a network – all without the need for agents or scripts. In the past month, Spiceworks has added over 20 new features based on customer input. Key new feature additions include:

  • E-mail alerts – users can set up e-mail alerts that notify them when free disk space drops below predefined thresholds, when new software is added to or critical software is removed from the network, when printer ink or toner are low, and when a server or workstation goes offline. The feature ensures that IT managers are quickly informed of critical issues that need their attention.
  • ‘One-click’ software reports – users can automatically generate a report of all the software installed on their network and the computers on which it’s installed, letting them easily identify license compliance issues and stay on top of software purchases.
  • Network Notes – users can create journal-like entries and attach them to individual hardware devices or software applications – bringing the popular approach of ‘tagging content’ into the IT network. The information is also searchable, making it easier to discover network notes in the future.

New Spiceworks software features are developed based on the suggestions and opinions of its user community. Top feature requests are posted and then voted on by Spiceworks software users.

“In just a few short weeks we’ve discovered that IT managers around the world agree they shouldn’t have to pay for technology to manage technology,” said Scott Abel, CEO of Spiceworks. “We also found that they’re really passionate about helping to define and test a product so it better meets their needs. We look forward to continuing to work closely with our community of users to quickly give them the new features they request and vote on so they can more easily manage their IT networks.”
