Spiceworks Doubles User Base to 30,000 in Less Than Two Months

Demand for Ad-supported Business Applications Accelerates as Small and Midsize Organizations Rely on Free Software to Manage IT Networks

AUSTIN, Texas – January 12, 2007 – Spiceworks™, Inc., the provider of the industry’s first free ad-supported IT management software, today announced that it has doubled its user base just two months following the launch of version 1.0 of the Spiceworks IT Desktop. Currently more than 30,000 small and midsize businesses and organizations in over 170 countries around the world rely on the browser-based Spiceworks software to manage their IT networks. Spiceworks also continued to release new product features at an unprecedented rate – with seven new features added in just 60 days.

“We not only use the Spiceworks application to manage our own network but we’re also using it to manage the IT environments for over 15 of our clients,” said Paul Berndt, account manager for systems integrator, Jenux Technologies. “The latest network and systems management functionality are ideal for helping organizations like ours keep tabs on our clients’ networks so they can stay focused on their core businesses. In the Spiceworks application I’m also able to learn about new IT products, which will be valuable for future purchasing decisions I make with my clients.”

The Spiceworks IT Desktop is designed for small and medium organizations with networks of up to 250 devices. Core product features include the ability to automatically discover, inventory, monitor, track and report on the hardware and software running in a network as well as community Q&A and help desk capabilities. The latest new features in the most recent release include:

  • Added Customization – allows users to customize inventory attributes and report on anything tracked on their IT network. This includes the ability to classify and track IT assets by the owner, office, department and even the state or country where it resides.
  • Enhanced Performance – the Spiceworks application now runs two to five times faster, making the management of networks quicker and easier.
  • Improved Proxy Support – simplifies installation for those sites using proxy servers and dramatically reduces the discovery time for those environments, enabling users to scan their networks in an average of six minutes.
  • Support for Gmail Accounts – allows users to receive alert notifications directly in their Gmail e-mail accounts.

A variety of organizations, including systems integrators, government agencies, businesses, manufacturers, educational institutions and non-profits are currently using Spiceworks software to manage software and hardware devices across multiple operating systems and platforms. The Spiceworks software is supported by displaying relevant ads on topics that are useful to IT professionals.

“There is clearly great demand for free, feature rich and easy to use IT management software by smaller organizations, which is helping to make the Spiceworks IT Desktop the fastest growing IT management product in the SMB market,” said Scot Abel, founder and CEO of Spiceworks. “This success is largely due to the input and advice we receive from our loyal user community, which helps ensure that the Spiceworks IT Desktop continues to meet the evolving needs of IT professionals around the world.”
