Apple has announced the date of one of the biggest tech events of this year’s fall, the iPhone 16 event. The company is using the tagline “It’s Glowtime” for the event and has already started sending press invitations for its upcoming event.
Apple usually launches its latest iPhones and Apple Watches during its fall launches just ahead of the important holiday shopping season. That said, the hardware changes are also expected to be more muted this year. The company also made a few announcements during its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2024), expected to become a reality this fall.
As such, here is what we may expect at the iPhone event.
What To Expect From the Event
1. Apple’s iPhone 16 lineup
For starters, users can expect the launch of the new iPhone 16 series, which may include the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max phones. This is good news for people looking to upgrade. The not-so-great news is that, according to most rumors, this will be another year of iterative improvements. Further, industry analysts believe that, as Apple followed the standard naming convention even for the iPhone 15 series of phones last year, the rumors of the company adopting the “iPhone Ultra” moniker may be exaggerated.
Even though Apple may not use the term “Ultra,” the Pro models may get slightly larger screens. Finally, as always, there may be a couple of new colors.
On the hardware side, the phones are expected to have a new chipset that uses the company’s recent push towards artificial intelligence (AI). The upgraded A18 chip may also be an iterative improvement regarding specifications. Further, the Pro and Pro Max phones may have a more powerful chip than the standard phones.
One rumor is that the standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will get the Action Button, similar to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. This button replaces the Mute switch and can be adjusted to perform a few other actions, such as changing ringer settings, turning on the flashlight, and launching the camera. Another button may be introduced to control camera features, but only for the Pro and Pro Max phones.
Finally, the iPhone 16 sets may see a design change for the camera module, where Apple may ditch the square and go with a vertical orientation.
2. iOS 18 and Apple Intelligence
In terms of AI, the company introduced its version of an AI system, Apple Intelligence, at WWDC 2024. In July, it also released a few public and developer beta versions of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, watchOS 11, and macOS Sequoia.
If previous years are an indicator, iOS 18 should be available to the public within a week following the event. Several features, like a more customizable Control Center, the ability to hide and lock apps, schedule messages, support for RCS messaging, and a new Password app, are expected to be part of the release. As for Apple Intelligence, people have to wait a little longer, as it is expected to be part of iOS 18.1 and may be released in October.

3. Apple Watch series
In addition to the iPhone series, the event usually witnesses the debut of new Apple Watch models. As such, users can expect to see the launch of the Apple Watch Series 10 (or possibly Series X). The company’s new smartwatch is expected to have a bigger screen that is more in line with the Ultra and a new chipset, making it more powerful and power efficient.
The smartwatch’s band system is also expected to be redesigned with new connectors, making the straps easier to adjust. However, users may be unable to use their existing bands on the Series X (or Series 10).
Besides Apple Watch Series 10 (or Series X), the company may launch Apple Watch Ultra 3 and a new version of the budget-friendly Watch SE.
4. Apple AirPods 4
Rumors suggest users will also see a few updated AirPods at the event. People may see both the entry-level and mid-tier versions of the AirPods 4, effectively replacing the AirPods 2 and AirPods 3. Further, the mid-tier version of AirPods 4 may support wireless charging. Both versions are expected to have similar designs, though the mid-tier version may support active noise cancellation.
Where Is the Event Happening and How To Watch It
The Apple iPhone event will take place on September 9 at the Steve Jobs Theater at the company’s headquarters in Cupertino, California. It will kick off at 10 AM PT/1 PM ET/6 PM BST. People can watch the live broadcast on apple.com, the company’s YouTube channel, or the Apple TV app.
