  • The Bluetooth tracking device company Tile has become a victim of a major data breach, potentially impacting millions of customers.
  • The anonymous hacker has demanded a ransom from Life360, Tile’s parent company.

The Bluetooth tracking device firm Tile has been targeted in a major data breach. Hackers stole sensitive data such as names, physical and email addresses, and phone numbers. Furthermore, Life360, the parent company behind Tile, received a ransom demand through an email for the safe return of the data. The hackers have also reportedly accessed tools law enforcement officers use for location requests.

While the company confirmed the news, it has also sought to reassure customers, stating details such as financial information, including credit card numbers and locations of individual Tile devices, were not stolen during the hack. However, considering the hack has potentially impacted millions of customers, it is a major concern for the company.

According to Chris Hulls, Life360’s CEO, the company reported the incident to law enforcement and took additional measures to protect its systems from further attempts. The incident has highlighted the growing sophistication of cyberattackers with ransom objectives. It is also suspected that the attack may have been a hacktivism effort, as Tile conducted data-sharing practices with law enforcement bodies.

While Tile has not yet contacted affected customers, users of Bluetooth tracking technologies should consider safety measures to minimize any risk. This can include:

  • Increased awareness of potential phishing scams through the exploitation of stolen email addresses.
  • Tile users should also regularly check websites such as https://haveibeenpwned.com/Opens a new window to determine if their data has been breached.
  • Setting up strong security pins for Bluetooth pairing purposes.
  • Turning off devices when not in use.

The attack might push customers to consider alternatives, from Chipolo, Apple, Samsung, and others. The long-term impact of the breach remains to be seen.
