Meta Supercharges CrowdTangle With New Safety Features To Meet EU Regulations
Meta Platforms has introduced new safety features to its misinformation tracking tool, CrowdTangle, to support its use during the European Parliament elections.
- Meta has enhanced CrowdTangle’s safety for EU elections, sending notifications to candidates and adding live displays.
- The European Commission has approved the initiative and urged ongoing monitoring and lasting solutions amid legal actions.
Meta Platforms Inc. has implemented a series of safety enhancements to its social media disinformation tool, CrowdTangle. This move addresses EU concerns about the platform’s potential misuse during the upcoming European Parliament elections.
An essential safety measure involves sending notifications directly to election candidates, clearly displayed at the top of their Facebook and Instagram feeds. These notifications will direct candidates to resources explaining how to secure their online accounts, including two-factor authentication and security settings. Additionally, candidates will learn about Instagram’s Hidden Words feature, which filters out offensive messages from private message requests.
Meta has implemented live displays into CrowdTangle for every EU country and categorized them based on relevant keywords, public groups, and Instagram profiles. This integration enhances transparency and facilitates real-time monitoring of election-related activities for researchers, journalists, and civil society organizations.

The European Commission has acknowledged Meta’s initiatives, approving the integration of safety features and highlighting the necessity of continuous effective monitoring. Furthermore, the commission has restated its appeal for Meta to implement lasting solutions to address all issues amid ongoing legal actions.
Meta’s addition of safety features to CrowdTangle aims to balance election monitoring and misinformation prevention. The success of these measures will depend on their effectiveness in mitigating risks and upholding democratic principles during the election process. The EU will closely monitor legal proceedings and measure effectiveness to ensure a fair electoral process.
