This collaboration, announced in May 2024, aims to develop cost-effective solutions for clean energy supply in the southern United States.
Through memorandums of understanding (MOUs), the companies will explore innovative electricity rate structures, or “tariffs,” specifically designed to incentivize investment in carbon-free technologies. These technologies include small modular reactors, a promising alternative to traditional nuclear power plants, and long-duration energy storage batteries, which are crucial for managing renewable energy sources like solar and wind. Steel manufacturer Nucor signed onto this initiative, reflecting the growing demand for clean energy across diverse industries.

This partnership is particularly timely given the booming data center industry. A recent study predicts data centers could consume a staggering 9% of U.S. electricity generation by 2030. However, the success of this initiative hinges on approval from regulatory bodies in North and South Carolina.
